Modak [Mothagam ] or Kolukattai
Modak or Mothhagam is an Indian sweet prepared and served as prasad on ganapathy chathurthi.
Lord Ganesha or Ganapathy is an Indian Hindu god with elephant head and his birthday will be celebrated as ganapathy chathurthi in India and all over the world who love ganesha.
His Favourite snack is Modak or Mothagam which is made by steaming rice flour stuffed with coconut jaggery or some times with dal.
Some people make it in shape of rain drop whereas some people make it in half-moon shape. But whatever the shape, Modaks are always great and flavorful and healthy as well. So here is my version of modak or kolukattai [in tamil] with coconut and jaggery stuffing.

Ingredients.
For outer layer
Rice flour - 3/4cup
Water - 1 1/2 cup
Salt - 1/2 tsp
Sesame oil - 1/2 tsp
For stuffing
Coconut - 1/2 cup
Jaggery - 1/2 cup
Cadamom - 1 crushed
Ghee - 2 tsp
Dry nuts - 1 tbsp chopped finely [ I used cashews and almonds 4 each]
Ghee - 2 tsp [ to shape modak or kolukattai]
Method :
Heat water in a sauce pan by adding salt and sesame oil. Once it comes to rolling boil, transfer into rice flour little by little to make smooth dough.
Cover with lid and let it to sit for 1 minutes while we proceed with making stuffing.
Place pan on your stove and add jaggery with little water. Make sure your flame to low as we just want the jaggery to melt. keep stirring and once jaggery melts completely, strain using sieve to remove any residue and keep it ready.
Now to the same pan, add ghee and dry nuts and fry till you get nice aroma. Then add coconut and fry for 1 minute.
Add strained jaggery water and cardamomand continue cooking till they become thick [ like consistency of dough]. Switch off the flame and once it cool down make them into small thumb lings. The size of your stuff should be little smaller than your rice thumb lings.
Now grease your palm with ghee and make small thumb lings with rice flour.
Please look into the video to know how to shape them into modak.
Flatten the rice thumb-lings and keep the stuff inside and grab the sides of rice flour altogether into centre to make modak shape. It would look like rain drop. you could also use modak molds to get perfect shape.
Do the same with rest of your rice flour and stuffing and keep them ready.
Heat Idli maker [or any steamer] with water and place idli plate over it. Arrange the prepared modak over it, cover it with lid and steam cook for 6-7 minutes.
Serve it hot with melted ghee for ganesha, do pooja and get his blessings. Enjoy the modak with your family and friends and have a happy ganesh chathurthi.
